PGA Seniors Championship

The European Senior Tour completed it’s three week stretch on British soil this June when Close House played host to the prestigious ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Championship for the very first time.

The tournament which lasted four days was played over the 6,813-yard par-71 Lee Westwood colt course saw many favourite big name golfers compete such as Sandy Lyle, Ian Woosnam, Sam Torrance and Barry Lane.

The event was a huge success, thousands of spectators turned up during the four days of golf to witness the defending champion Spaniard Santiago Luna miss out on retaining the title to Australian Peter Fowler. Fowler finished 12 under par, three shots ahead of the Austrian, Gordon Manson. It was Fowler’s second win in consecutive tournaments after victory in Jersey last week.

The Australian came into the final day with a four-shot lead and eventually won by three but he did not have it all his own way during the final round at Close House.

Fowler, the winner of last week’s Acorn Jersey Open, double bogeyed the ninth hole to see his lead disappear as Austria’s Gordon Manson pulled level with the 56 year old. But Fowler refused to buckle and refocused his efforts on the back nine, eliminating his mistakes and conjuring three birdies to ensure a fifth European Senior Tour win. Manson finished second, three shots back, with Carl Mason in third place at eight under par.
